Goodnight MoonYou’ll need to start reading around lunchtime if you have an “open-concept” floor plan. Goodnight sofa, goodnight refrigerator, goodnight dining room table, goodnight ironing board, goodnight crap by the front door… Though perhaps the interior design was intended to provide a short cut: those curtains make me want to close my eyes post haste.
The Giving Tree
This one made me sad and uncomfortable as a child and induced vicious depression as an adult. Elna’s papa pointed out that one could take the angle that we, like the tree, already have everything Elna needs and that giving it freely will make us happy. “So you don’t feel compelled to get into the fetal position by the end?” “No, no, I’m suicidal by page three.”
Benny’s Had Enough!
This reads as though the publisher decided to save some cash, skip the Swedish translator, and just guess the storyline himself based on the drawings. And yet I imagine a reviewer of the original would say, “Thank God for this detailed text, because if one just looked at the drawings they would think this story absurd!” Among its lessons: the personal computer is ruining society, homelessness sucks.
